Pokémon began in Japan on February 27, 1996, when Nintendo released Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green for the Game Boy. Game Freak developed the games, with Satoshi Tajiri credited as creator and Ken Sugimori responsible for the distinctive character and creature artwork. The concept grew from Tajiri’s childhood interest in collecting insects and from the Game Boy’s Link Cable, which allowed players to exchange creatures between systems. Pokémon Blue followed in Japan, while an expanded Red and Blue version reached North America in 1998 and Europe in 1999. The original games take place in the fictional Kanto region, inspired partly by Japan’s Kantō area. The player, a young trainer from Pallet Town, receives one of three Pokémon—Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle—from Professor Oak. After choosing a starter, the player explores routes, forests, caves, and cities, capturing wild Pokémon and training them for battles. The central objective is to defeat eight Gym Leaders, earn their badges, challenge the Elite Four, and become Pokémon Champion. The player’s recurring rival, Oak’s grandson, selects a starter with an advantage over the protagonist’s choice. Team Rocket provides the main criminal threat. Led by Giovanni, the organization exploits Pokémon and attempts to control powerful creatures. Its activities connect several major events, including the Silph Co. takeover in Saffron City and the final confrontation at the Team Rocket hideout in Viridian City. The games also contain a more tragic story beneath the adventure: documents in Cinnabar Island’s Pokémon Mansion describe experiments involving Mew, while Mewtwo, created through genetic manipulation, waits in the unknown Cerulean Cave after the player becomes Champion. A defining feature is the division between versions. Certain Pokémon appear only in Red or only in Blue, requiring players to trade through the Link Cable to complete the original 151-species Pokédex. This design made cooperation part of progression rather than an optional extra. Players could also battle friends’ trained teams, establishing a competitive tradition that continues in later entries. Pokémon’s success extended beyond the games. The animated television series premiered in Japan in April 1997, starring Ash Ketchum and Pikachu, but the games remain the foundation of the franchise’s mechanics and mythology. Their turn-based battles, elemental types, experience levels, evolutions, status effects, and collectible roster created a durable role-playing structure. The first generation therefore stands not merely as a nostalgic Game Boy release, but as the specific starting point for a worldwide series built around exploration, strategy, exchange, and discovery.
