Demon’s Souls is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware for the PlayStation 3. It was first released in Japan in February 2009, followed by North America later that year and Europe in 2010. Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the game. Although it preceded Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls takes place in its own setting: the kingdom of Boletaria, where King Allant’s pursuit of forbidden Soul Arts has awakened a being called the Old One. A colorless fog spreads across the land, and demons consume human souls.
The player enters Boletaria as an adventurer seeking to confront the crisis. After an early encounter with the Vanguard demon, the character reaches the Nexus, a refuge overseen by the Maiden in Black and the surviving Monumental. From there, archstones lead to five regions: Boletarian Palace, Stonefang Tunnel, the Tower of Latria, the Shrine of Storms, and the Valley of Defilement. A sixth archstone stands broken in the Nexus, but its destination is not playable.
Each region has a distinct history and set of enemies. Stonefang Tunnel is a mining complex overrun by demons; the Tower of Latria holds prisoners under the rule of the Old Monk. In Boletarian Palace, the player fights defenders including the Tower Knight and the Penetrator before reaching the figure known as False King Allant. The journey eventually leads beneath the Nexus to the Old One and a final choice involving the Maiden in Black.
Death is central to the game’s design. Dying sends the character back to the last archstone and leaves their carried souls at the place of death. Reaching that spot without dying again recovers them; another death loses them. Characters also shift between body and soul forms, with soul form reducing maximum health. World Tendency changes conditions in each region according to events such as boss victories and deaths in body form, opening certain paths and altering encounters.
Demon’s Souls also used network features unusually for its time. Players could leave messages, see bloodstains showing others’ final moments, summon allies, or invade another player’s world. The Old Monk encounter could even put an invading player in the boss’s role.
Bluepoint Games remade Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5 in 2020, retaining its structure while rebuilding its visuals and audio. The remake brought Boletaria to a new console generation, but the original’s connected worlds, punishing recovery system, and unusually indirect storytelling remained at its core.
