Call of Duty began as a World War II first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2003. Its single-player campaign divided the conflict among American, British, and Soviet perspectives, including missions inspired by the Allied invasion of Normandy and the Battle of Stalingrad. Rather than presenting one continuous hero, the game used several protagonists and emphasized coordinated infantry combat, scripted set pieces, and radio-directed objectives. Its success established a series that would repeatedly change historical periods and fictional settings while retaining recognizable multiplayer systems. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released in 2007, moved the main series into a contemporary fictional conflict. Players alternated between British Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish and United States Marine Sergeant Paul Jackson while confronting the ultranationalist Imran Zakhaev and his ally Khaled Al-Asad. The campaign’s nuclear detonation in a Middle Eastern city and its closing pursuit of Zakhaev became especially remembered scenes. Modern Warfare also popularized experience-based multiplayer progression, unlockable weapons, killstreak rewards, and customizable classes, features that strongly influenced later shooters. The 2010 release Call of Duty: Black Ops, developed by Treyarch, followed CIA operative Alex Mason through Cold War flashbacks involving the Bay of Pigs invasion, Vietnam, and the Soviet Union. Its story introduced the numbers broadcast and the sleeper-agent plot surrounding Mason. It also included the Zombies mode, which had originated as an extra in World at War and became a major part of the franchise. In 2011, Modern Warfare 3 concluded the original Modern Warfare trilogy, resolving the conflict with Vladimir Makarov and ending Captain Price’s long pursuit of him. Subsequent entries explored different directions. Advanced Warfare, released in 2014, introduced exoskeleton movement and cast Kevin Spacey as Jonathan Irons. Infinite Warfare, released in 2016, extended combat into space and featured a campaign led by Captain Nick Reyes. World War II returned in 2017, while Black Ops IIII notably omitted a traditional single-player campaign in favor of multiplayer, Zombies, and the battle-royale mode Blackout. In 2020, Warzone became a free-to-play battle royale connected to the broader Call of Duty ecosystem. The franchise has also become a major annual multiplayer phenomenon, with competitive modes, seasonal content, and cross-platform play shaping its modern releases. Although criticized at times for repetitive yearly production, it remains distinguished by its specific blend of cinematic campaigns, historically or politically framed conflicts, and multiplayer progression linking separate eras through familiar series traditions today.
