Released in 2018 by Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption and follows Arthur Morgan, an outlaw and senior member of the Van der Linde gang. Set in 1899, it begins after a failed ferry robbery in Blackwater forces the gang to flee eastward into mountains of Ambarino. Dutch van der Linde, the gang’s charismatic leader, insists that one last score will finance a new life beyond reach of lawmen, industrialists, and rival gangs. Arthur serves as Dutch’s trusted enforcer while increasingly questioning Dutch’s judgment and the gang’s fading ideals. The story moves through camps at Horseshoe Overlook, Clemens Point, Shady Belle, Lakay, Beaver Hollow, and other locations, with each relocation reflecting the gang’s worsening position. Key members include John Marston, whose later life anchors the first game; Hosea Matthews, Dutch’s longtime partner; Sadie Adler, a widow who becomes a formidable gunfighter; and Charles Smith, a hunter and tracker. Arthur’s relationships with them give the narrative its emotional weight. He also confronts Micah Bell, a violent newcomer whose influence over Dutch becomes increasingly destructive. The Pinkerton Detective Agency, represented prominently by Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross, pursues the gang throughout the campaign. Gameplay combines third-person shooting, horseback travel, hunting, fishing, robbery, poker, and a detailed honor system. Arthur can greet, antagonize, threaten, or assist strangers, and these decisions affect honor as well as certain story scenes and the ending’s tone. The game’s world includes the fictional states of New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth, Ambarino, and New Austin. Its towns include Valentine, Saint Denis, Rhodes, Strawberry, and Blackwater. Saint Denis, inspired by turn-of-the-century New Orleans, emphasizes contrast between the gang’s frontier existence and an urbanizing America shaped by railroads, factories, and wealthy business interests. Arthur is diagnosed with tuberculosis late in the story, a development that reframes his choices as Dutch becomes more paranoid and ruthless. The main narrative ends with the gang shattered; its epilogue shifts control to John Marston, who builds Beecher’s Hope with Abigail, Jack, and Uncle. John’s work for Sadie and Charles and his final confrontation with Micah connect directly to events preceding the 1911 game. Red Dead Online, launched alongside the game, lets players create a character and undertake missions in the same frontier setting. The game received widespread critical acclaim for its performances, open world, writing, and technical detail. It won numerous awards and became one of the best-selling video games ever, with more than 70 million copies shipped by 2024.
