Edit reference

Dragon Ball Online was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball universe. It was developed by the South Korean studio NTL and published in Korea by CJ Internet. Toriyama participated in the project’s early planning and supplied designs, while the story was positioned as a continuation of the original manga’s world rather than a retelling of its battles. The game’s central setting was Earth one thousand years after the events associated with Goku’s era. This future allowed familiar locations, species, techniques, and historical figures to appear alongside new characters and conflicts created for the online format.

Players created a character from one of three playable races: Earthling, Namekian, or Majin. These choices were linked to different class paths. Earthlings could become martial artists or spiritualists; Namekians could develop as Dragon Clan members or warriors; and Majins could follow strange, magical combat roles. Character progression included quests, equipment, skills, and transformations. Earthlings could eventually access Super Saiyan, while Namekians and Majins received their own race-specific transformation options. The design therefore made familiar Dragon Ball power growth part of a conventional online role-playing structure, with grinding, party play, and competition existing beside story content.

The main narrative begins with the player as a newcomer drawn into a conflict involving the Red Pants Army, successor to the Red Ribbon Army, in the distant future. A time-traveling element is central to the game: the Time Machine quests let players revisit moments from Dragon Ball history and confront enemies connected to those events. Mira and Towa serve as antagonists. Mira is a bio-engineered fighter, while Towa is a demon scientist; their plans connect the future crisis with distortions of the past. The plot uses these encounters to explain why legendary scenes can be experienced without replacing the original story.

Gameplay combined open-world travel with traditional MMORPG activities. Players accepted quests from non-player characters, fought monsters, collected items, and formed parties for tougher missions. The world included places recognizable from the franchise, such as West City, Korin Tower, and the lands around the Lookout, although the future setting gave them changed histories and appearances. The game also featured player-versus-player combat and the World Tournament, a competitive event reflecting Dragon Ball’s martial-arts tradition. Dragon Balls were collectible objectives, and gathering all seven allowed a player to summon Shenron and choose from wishes that granted rewards.

The Korean service closed in 2013.
