Edit reference

Grand Kingdom is a tactical role-playing game developed by MonoChro and published by Spike Chunsoft in Japan and NIS America in the West. It was released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in Japan in November 2015, followed by North American and European releases in 2016. The game takes place after the fall of the Uldein Empire, whose collapse left the continent divided among four major powers: Landerth, Valkyr, Magion, and Fiel. Players lead a mercenary company during this unstable period, accepting contracts from competing nations rather than serving a single permanent kingdom.

The player’s central character is a guild leader who recruits and manages mercenaries. Combat uses a side-view battlefield divided into lanes and positions. Units move through those spaces, spend action points, and attack within ranges determined by their weapons and class abilities. The roster includes recognizable fantasy roles such as fighters, knights, paladins, wizards, archers, medics, rogues, and lancers, with each class contributing different tactical options. Positioning matters because attacks can strike multiple targets, push enemies, exploit openings, or affect allies.

Grand Kingdom’s main campaign, called the Grand Campaign, presents a sequence of contracts and story battles connected to the continent’s political struggle. Its most distinctive feature is the online War mode, in which players pledge their companies to one of the four nations. Rather than directly fighting other players in conventional real-time matches, participants submit orders and deploy units as part of a broader territorial conflict. The system combines asynchronous participation with strategic decisions about contracts, battlefields, and national objectives.

The game also uses a board-like quest map for exploration. Players move through nodes, encounter enemies and events, gather resources, and choose routes before reaching a mission’s conclusion. These choices make contract completion more involved than simply entering isolated battles. Between missions, the company can be developed through recruitment, equipment, skills, and class customization.

Grand Kingdom is notable for combining a mercenary-management premise with deliberately structured tactical combat and an online war framework. Its setting is not an adaptation of a famous medieval history; the Hundred Years’ War influence appears in its atmosphere and factional conflict, while the nations, characters, and fantasy systems belong to the game’s original world. The PlayStation Vita version also reflects the title’s original portable-console design, while the PlayStation 4 release brought the same core campaign and systems to a home-console audience. Together, these elements define Grand Kingdom as a strategy-focused fantasy RPG centered on contracts, political allegiance, and the practical growth of a professional mercenary company.
