Gran Turismo 6 is the sixth numbered entry in Polyphony Digital’s racing series and was released for PlayStation 3 in December 2013. Sony Computer Entertainment published it, while Kazunori Yamauchi served as producer. The game arrived near the end of the PS3 generation, yet its scope was unusually large: its car roster exceeded 1,200 vehicles, and its circuits included both real venues and fictional tracks from earlier Gran Turismo games. Unlike a conventional story-driven title, GT6 has no named protagonist or scripted plot. Its career presents progression through license tests, coffee-break challenges, championships, and special events, with credits earned through racing and used to purchase cars and upgrades.
At launch, GT6 introduced the “Star” system, which rewarded milestone achievements separately from ordinary race victories. Its headline feature was the Ayrton Senna content, created with the Instituto Ayrton Senna. Players could follow Senna’s career through documentary material and time-trial challenges, including events based on his early karting years and Formula One achievements. The update also added the Lotus 97T, the turbocharged 1985 Formula One car associated with Senna’s breakthrough victory at Estoril. This was historical content tied to a real driver, rather than a fictional campaign. GT6 also marked the twentieth anniversary of the Gran Turismo brand, a connection reflected in promotional events and its broad retrospective selection of cars and tracks.
GT6’s driving model built on collaboration with tire manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension specialist KW Automotive. Polyphony Digital described the project as an effort to improve tire and suspension simulation. The game supported a range of vehicle behaviors, from front-wheel-drive road cars to high-downforce prototypes and open-wheel racers. Its online component included seasonal events, open lobbies, and community features, while the game’s GPS Visualizer could use recorded GPS data to generate a replay course. Within the career, players could enter the Goodwood Hillclimb special event using the actual 1.16-mile course at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The track was added through an update and recreated the narrow estate road rather than presenting a generic circuit.
Although GT6’s online services and downloadable content are no longer central to its current availability, the single-player structure remains distinctive. It combines licensed manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Nissan, and Toyota, with original Gran Turismo designs such as the fictional Vision Gran Turismo cars. These concept cars were developed with real automakers specifically for the game and included the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo. The result.
