The Witcher Remake is an upcoming role-playing game from CD Projekt Red, developed in collaboration with Polish studio Fool’s Theory. It is a modern reimagining of the original 2007 game, which introduced protagonist Geralt of Rivia in an adaptation

Edit reference

The Witcher Remake is an announced re-creation of CD Projekt Red’s first Witcher video game, originally released for Windows in 2007. CD Projekt Red revealed the project in October 2022 under the development codename Canis Majoris, confirming it remains in early production.

The remake is developed by Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio whose team includes veterans of earlier Witcher games. CD Projekt Red supervises the project. It will use Unreal Engine 5, technology selected for CDPR’s Witcher pipeline and future games.

The source game follows Geralt of Rivia immediately after his unexplained return to life. Suffering amnesia, he is discovered near Kaer Morhen, the witchers’ stronghold, and brought inside before the fortress is attacked by the Salamandra criminal organization in force.

After the assault, Geralt travels toward Vizima, capital of Temeria, while investigating Salamandra. The organization is led by Azar Javed and aided by the Professor, whose attack on Kaer Morhen helps establish the remake’s central conflict across Geralt’s dangerous investigation.

In Vizima, the investigation intersects with King Foltest’s political crisis and a struggle between the Order of the Flaming Rose and the Scoia’tael, an elven and dwarven resistance movement. Geralt’s choices determine alliances, violence, and the kingdom’s fragile future afterward.

The original game is notable for adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s setting with an original story rather than retelling a novel. It introduced characters and consequences not present in the books, while retaining Geralt, Triss Merigold, Dandelion, Zoltan Chivay, and established figures.

Its structure divides the campaign into chapters set around Vizima and its surroundings, with investigations, contracts, dialogue, alchemy, and combat shaping progression. Several decisions produce delayed consequences, including the side Geralt supports during the city’s political and ethnic conflict there.

CD Projekt Red has described the remake as a modern reconstruction intended to rebuild the 2007 experience from the ground up. That wording distinguishes it from a simple remaster. The project will revisit presentation and systems while preserving identity carefully.

No release date, platforms, or feature list has been announced for The Witcher Remake. CDPR’s information supports a conclusion: it is an early-stage Unreal Engine 5 remake of the first game, produced by Fool’s Theory under CDPR oversight currently.

The project’s story details remain unconfirmed, but its foundation is clear. It returns to Geralt’s first original game adventure: amnesia, Kaer Morhen’s assault, Salamandra’s conspiracy, Temerian politics, and choices that connect personal loyalties with the fate of the wider Continent.
