Dynasty Warriors began as a one-on-one fighting game released by Koei for the PlayStation in 1997. In Japan it was titled Sangokumusou, a name drawn from the Three Kingdoms setting that would define the series. Its characters, costumes, weapons, and rivalries were inspired by Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, although the game presented a stylized interpretation rather than a strict retelling of recorded history. Players selected warriors associated with the states of Wei, Wu, and Shu and fought in arena-style matches. The franchise changed dramatically with Dynasty Warriors 2, released in 2000 for PlayStation 2. Despite its number outside Japan, it was known there as Shin Sangokumusou and was effectively a new format rather than a direct continuation of the original fighting-game design. Koei transformed the series into a large-scale action game in which one hero could defeat scores of opposing soldiers on a battlefield. This “one versus thousands” structure became Dynasty Warriors’ defining feature and influenced many later games. Dynasty Warriors 2 used historical campaigns from the late Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms era as a framework. Battles such as the Yellow Turban Rebellion, the Battle of Hulao Gate, and the Battle of Chi Bi appeared as scenarios, while figures including Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Jian, Lu Bu, Zhao Yun, and Guan Yu served as playable officers. The games freely dramatize events: Guan Yu’s famous weapon is commonly depicted as the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, while Lu Bu is recognized for his halberd and for his portrayal as an exceptionally dangerous opponent. Koei merged with Tecmo in 2009, and subsequent Dynasty Warriors titles were published under Koei Tecmo. Omega Force has been the principal development studio behind the mainline action games. The series expanded beyond the core historical setting through licensed collaborations, including Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, and One Piece: Pirate Warriors, each applying the crowd-combat formula to another fictional universe. Dynasty Warriors 9, released in 2018, introduced an open-world structure to the numbered series, covering China through a connected map and allowing players to travel between battle locations. Dynasty Warriors: Origins was announced by Koei Tecmo in 2024 as a new entry focused on the early Three Kingdoms period. Across its many installments, Dynasty Warriors remains closely identified with Romance of the Three Kingdoms, exaggerated heroic combat, and battles designed around commanding or joining vast armies.
