The promotion can even replace a player's chosen background on Xbox Series X|S, but a customization setting can prevent the switch.

Xbox Series X|S owners have begun seeing an ad for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in place of their chosen console background. The promotion can replace both dynamic backgrounds and images uploaded by players, including those who have already bought the game or have no interest in the franchise.

The change is tied to the Xbox setting “show event-themed backgrounds,” which is on by default. When enabled, it allows promotional campaigns to take over the space reserved for personalization. Players who turn on their consoles and find a different image may not immediately understand why their previous choice has disappeared.

Simply changing the background may not fix it. To stop the promotion from returning, players need to open the Xbox personalization settings and turn off “show event-themed backgrounds.” After that, the system should keep their selected image in place.

The frustration is not just about seeing an ad: advertising on the Xbox dashboard is already part of the experience. This campaign instead uses the console’s main background, an area players may have customized with their own image. Because the setting is enabled by default, the change can happen even if a player never chose to receive promotional backgrounds.

The setting gives players a way to restore their console’s appearance, but it requires a specific change. Without turning it off, selecting a personal image or dynamic background again may not stop another promotional campaign from replacing it.
