Subnautica 2 will receive update 1.2, titled “Buddy System”, on August 19. The update focuses on multiplayer sessions, adding features that make cooperation between friends more practical and provide new ways to communicate while exploring.

The main addition is proximity chat. Nearby players will be heard more loudly, while their voices will become quieter as the distance increases. The audio will also gain an unstable radio effect when a friend moves away.

The update adds emotes, including thumbs-up and thumbs-down gestures, applause and raised fists. Applause can be used to celebrate, but also to react sarcastically when a teammate is downed.

Another change allows players to share items directly. Simply approach a friend to open a menu and transfer objects between inventories, without having to leave resources in the environment for the other player to collect.

When a player or their teammate is incapacitated, there will be a short window to swim over and share oxygen, helping bring them back. The update also includes two new avatars and more color options for suits.

Among the additional features is a tracking tag that can be thrown into the environment to help locate objects. It can also be placed on a portable locker left behind. If the player has it when they die, the tag increases the signal range of the black box.

The interface will display smaller icons when they are outside the player's field of view and larger ones when the player is looking at them. Pinned recipes will be improved, and the base-building tool will more clearly indicate when an object can be placed. The update also includes bug fixes and will be released on August 19.
