ROLLA puts players in control of a walking mass of flesh that tears through cities in search of destruction. Its premise recalls Katamari Damacy, with the same roll-and-grow mechanic of absorbing objects along the way, but replaces the colorful tone with graphic violence and the look of a monstrous B-movie.Each level presents its own challenges, such as destroying a specific number of radio towers, killing a certain number of humans or causing millions in property damage. The mass gradually grows as it moves through each environment, although the demo suggested that it has a maximum size. It can still shrink during a run. That reduction is not caused by poorly judged collisions. In ROLLA, the police and military respond to the attack, using gunfire, rockets and other weapons to wear the creature down until they destroy it. Survival depends on keeping moving and mastering the rolling abilities as the security forces close in.The game also features temporary bonuses. Shields can deflect or absorb incoming fire, while an electrical power lets players fire lightning from the creature's own body. The variety of these abilities still appears limited, which could affect the pace of longer sequences of levels. The control scheme also raises a question: ROLLA could use a more tactile alternative to make rolling feel as distinctive as it does in Katamari, but that change might conflict with the rest of the design.Even with those caveats, the combination of destruction, flesh and B-movie humor already stands out. ROLLA will have a demo available on Steam, where it can also be added to players' wishlists. The game is scheduled to launch on September 30, with no year specified in the published text.
