Quake received a free expansion to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Announced and released during the opening ceremony of QuakeCon, Quake: Dawn of the Machine is available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch. The expansion was not released for the Epic Games Store and GOG versions of the game.Dawn of the Machine features a full campaign with 19 maps, an original soundtrack and a new map for deathmatch matches. The project brings together id Software and MachineGames, the studio behind the recent Wolfenstein games and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.The story follows Ranger as he attempts to escape “uma dimensão de ilusão infinita,” as described on Bethesda’s website. The protagonist relives the same cycles of violence for what seems like several lifetimes, and escaping requires a confrontation with the so-called Nightmare Machine.The expansion also reworks familiar Quake enemies such as Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog and Blood Shambler. They have new behaviors and greater firepower, requiring players to change how they approach each encounter. The arsenal includes brutal variants inspired by classic expansions, including the Super Axe and the Laser Cannon.The campaign is structured around loops. Each attempt reshuffles the experience, while runes unlock paths and alter routes, encounters and secrets. Health and ammunition upgrades carry over between cycles, allowing Ranger to grow stronger with each repetition. Quake: Dawn of the Machine is now available for free on compatible platforms.The release comes during the year Quake turns three decades old. The expansion arrives amid restructuring at id Software and layoffs at ZeniMax, as Xbox seeks to focus its efforts on franchises such as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Quake.
