GameMaker will allow developers to create and distribute commercial games without a Professional license starting January 1, 2027. The change applies to GMRT, the tool’s next-generation runtime, and covers releases for desktop, mobile devices, the web and GX Games.

GameMaker announced the change in an update on GMRT. Under the new model, developers will be able to work on commercial projects without purchasing a Professional license. Source code access will also be available at every tier.

The change expands on an initiative announced earlier, when the company made its tools available for non-commercial use on PC. GameMaker is a suite of game-development tools with around 26 years of history and has been used to create independent games such as Undertale, Spelunky, Hotline Miami, Hyper Light Drifter and Nuclear Throne.

Console distribution will follow different rules. Regardless of which runtime is used, developers will need an Enterprise license and approval as a developer to export games to those platforms. GameMaker also said there will be no changes to the current subscription prices.

Developers who already hold a Professional license will continue to be able to commercially distribute games made with the GMS2 runtime. They will also receive access to the GMS2 runtime’s source code. The announcement therefore covers both new projects using GMRT and the continuation of work developed in the previous version.

According to GameMaker head Russell Kay, the company aims to make development more accessible and flexible. He also said that GMRT continues to be released in beta for different platforms as the team expands what it offers the community.

The full update on the new licensing model is available on the official GameMaker pagelink outside website. Free commercial use begins January 1, 2027.
