Many Sonic games have been released over the years, and while not all of them are particularly memorable, some have certainly caught the attention of fans. However, over time, they've been forgotten on older platforms—meaning they aren't easily (or officially) accessible to everyone.

With that in mind, we've put together this article to point out which games featuring the world's most famous hedgehog could make a comeback. Some will need a control overhaul, but they’d be very welcome for fans to enjoy various gameplay features. Check’em out:

Sonic games that deserve to be re-released

Sonic Unleashed

The famous Sonic the “Wolfy” Hedgehog game. After its release, the game generated serious debate among fans. After all, a curse transforming the hedgehog into a wolf with nighttime combat skills was quite a different idea. Despite the complaints, the game marked an interesting and creative phase in the franchise. Currently, it isn’t available for gameplay on current platforms. Is it worth a return?

Sonic Riders

Sonic Riders hasn't been forgotten, even with the release of CrossWorld, SEGA's most recent racing game featuring the character. With surfboards and waves scattered throughout the levels, players surfed their way to the top in races that somehow managed to incorporate interesting narratives and characters.

The way they incorporated the floating gardens of Babylon with the surfboard technology is remarkable. Not to mention the gameplay and soundtrack, addictive and memorable enough for SEGA to create a sequel, called Zero Gravity. Both, unfortunately, have been left behind with each passing generation.

Sonic Heroes

Instead of mentioning the questionable Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), let's move on to another incredible offering in terms of gameplay. Fast-paced, exhilarating, and team-based, Sonic Heroes was composed of teams. Sonic's group with Knuckles and Tails, Shadow's team with other villains, and so on.

The levels were very fast-paced, and the narrative also kept us interested in reaching a grand finale. As usual, it had Chaos Emeralds and all those "elements" that make a Sonic game exciting. It’s no longer available for sale.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

Released for the Wii, Sonic and the Secret Rings takes the hedgehog into the world of One Thousand and One Nights, offering a different take on the franchise. Here, Sonic is transported into a magical book and must recover artifacts to prevent the destruction of that world.

Throughout the journey, the game features linear levels focused on speed and the use of the Wii motion controllers. Furthermore, the narrative stands out by exploring a more direct and even sarcastic side of the character, while blending action with elements of classic fantasy. The big challenge? Do the Wii controls somehow fit with those currently available?

Sonic and the Black Knight

A direct sequel within the so-called "Storybook Series," Sonic and the Black Knight transports Sonic to the universe of King Arthur. This time, the game adds sword combat, placing the character on a journey to confront the legendary Black Knight and understand the fate of that kingdom.

The game expands on the formula of its predecessor by incorporating sword action mechanics and a more dramatic narrative. Furthermore, the story explores themes such as heroism and destiny, while adapting characters from the franchise to roles inspired by the Knights of the Round Table. As with Secret Rings, should it return, it would be interesting to see the controls adapted.

So, what did you think of our list? Which one would you like to see for a comeback?
