The enigma of the spider webs

Since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, the fan community has explored every inch of the map in search of secrets and easter eggs. Some mysteries were quickly deciphered, others generated theories, debates, and meticulous investigations, but all were unveiled, and it seemed that everything in RDR2 had already been discovered. Until, at the end of 2025, they discovered a mystery involving a sequence of spider webs, notches on posts, and clues at exact times that would change the perception of how we see design in video games: the mystery of the spider webs.

A telegraph pole located in the Cornwall factory showed strange spider webs that appeared only at specific times in the early morning. It seemed that this was the beginning of an easter egg, but what the community discovered was only one step in something much bigger—and perhaps the most bizarre and macabre mystery in history.

The first sign: poles, spiders, and strange schedules.

It all started with a player who noticed something strange on a telegraph pole near the Heartland Oil Fields: a spider symbol carved into the wood, which was only visible between 3 and 4 in the morning. At the top of the pole, spider webs and hanging feathers appeared, which could be dislodged by shooting, indicating that something strange was happening there.

The players then placed the spider symbol on the game map, and the legs seemed to point to several other scattered telegraph poles, each with its own web and feathers, and one detail in common: all were visible at specific times in the early morning—each at a different hour. As they followed the clues, they found the letter “N” carved into the wood of one of the poles—which was interpreted as the north direction. From that point, they found another larger web among the trees, displaying the letter “N” and a symbol resembling another telegraph pole. Following this path, they reached another pole to the north, which showed the letter “W” and five pole carvings. Traveling along the five poles to the west, they found another carving that pointed to “NW”, northwest, and had a symbol of a guitar.

The trail led to Fort Wallace, where bird sculptures were found atop one of the towers (remember the feathers in the webs?), showing a connection between the symbols – indicating they were on the right track. This type of sequence with directions, objects, and appearances transformed the hunt for webs into something bigger than a simple easter egg; now it was a hunt for an encrypted mystery.

The Macabre Secret of the Braithwaites

Investigating the map, the players arrived at a place that was previously seen as a simple isolated nowhere within the game. To better understand, let's visit the lands of the Braithwaite family. While the main plot focuses on the war between rival clans, a disturbing detail was hidden in the back of the Braithwaite property: a small latrine locked with chains, where groans and screams can be heard. Inside we find Gertrude Braithwaite, a person whom many interpreted as a representation of the consequences of @@@@ practiced by the Braithwaite family to maintain the purity of their bloodline. But Gertrude is much more than human social decay – she’s the starting point of everything we’ve seen so far.

Upon observing Gertrude, we notice severe deformities, such as a cleft lip and grayish skin that doesn't seem to belong to a living human being. The most sinister thing is that, upon visiting the Saint Denis tavern, we find an old photograph of her. In the photo, we see Gertrude healthy before her "transformation". This drastic change suggests that something strange happened to the young woman. However, the most intriguing aspect is the girl's obsession with numbers, which she repeats endlessly. Gertrude compulsively tries to count, but always stops at the number five – when she tries to continue, her mind seems to freeze and she utters disjointed phrases. This limitation isn’t random; it’s the first clue to the mystery of the spider webs.

The Cursed Village

Now comes the most macabre part of this whole mystery: the connection between Braithwaite Manor and the village of Butcher's Creek in Roanoke Ridge. By drawing a straight line from Gertrude's latrine, we are led to the center of Butcher's Creek. This place is known for its deformed and paranoid population. The official explanation in the game for the inhabitants' illnesses is the poisoning of the water by mining waste from the Cornwall company, but the mystery suggests that this is just a smokescreen for something more sinister. Between 4 and 6 AM, a pentagram appears under one of the village houses. This alone would be quite macabre, but something else caught the players' attention.

In Butcher’s Creek, the numerical pattern that Gertrude repeats endlessly is finally revealed: in the village there are five latrines very similar to the one in which the Braithwaite heiress is locked, and inside each latrine there are carvings with numbers from one to five. The revelation becomes even more macabre when, connecting the dots of the five latrines on the map, a pentagram appears on the village terrain. The pentagram is a symbol historically associated with rituals, pacts, and occult themes. The Braithwaites, in some way, have a connection to occultism, which is directly linked to the residents of Roanoke Ridge and which consequently affected Gertrude.

The Five Crosses and the Final Destiny

One of the most ominous elements found on a telegraph pole is a design of five crosses all placed in a specific way, accompanied by the letter "W", indicating the West. Upon returning to Braithwaite Manor, we find the family's private cemetery, which has five tombstones arranged in exactly the same position as the carving on the pole.

The same arrangement of five crosses is found in a small cemetery in the same area of Butcher's Creek, and from this second cemetery the player is led to the fourth latrine, closing the cycle that connects the site of the macabre ritual. Remembering that a pentagram has five sides, the same number of crosses in both cemeteries, something that could indicate a ritual linking the two locations. In one of the village latrines, we find an inscription that leads us to Fort Brennand and to the telegraph poles, showing that everything was part of the same chain of clues. This interconnection shows that the poles with the webs, which previously seemed to be the beginning of the mystery, were only an intermediate part of something even bigger, eliminating any possibility of coincidence. Rockstar created one of the darkest and most macabre mysteries to tell the story of a lineage and its quest for power and purity, which ended up opening the doors to something supernatural that now runs through the wires of the communication poles in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Madame Nazar and GTA VI

Players are still mapping the symbols and discussing theories about the meaning of this whole tangle of clues. Some hypotheses suggest a deeper message, perhaps related to some narrative event or metaphor about the game's universe. Others believe that some parts may never have been finished by Rockstar or were designed to remain unfinished, a kind of Wild West legend.

But many fans believe in a theory that would change our perception of how we play video games: the mystery of the spiderwebs will only be fully revealed in GTA VI. This came to light with Madame Nazar – the fortune teller who can be found in her roadside sales carriage – who prophesies about the need to “untangle the web after many years”, a phrase that may sound like some event related to upcoming games.

Considering Rockstar's history of creating connections between games — such as the Epsilon cult or references to the time of Francis Sinclair — the resolution of the mystery in GTA VI would be the pinnacle of game design. In RDR2, the mystery of the webs is linked to the communication technology of 19th-century telegraphs, and following the technological transition to the 21st century, the social networks of GTA VI could be the perfect ending to this supernatural mystery.

The best-constructed mystery in gaming.

Regardless of the outcome, the mystery of the spiderwebs has already left an indelible mark on the Red Dead Redemption 2 community and gaming culture. Beyond being a highly elaborate puzzle, it showcased the unity and collaboration of players, who came together and uncovered a mystery seven years after the release of RDR2, a mystery that still holds secrets that defy our understanding and continues to fuel debates, theories, and discoveries.

While Rockstar remains silent about the mystery, debates, videos, and maps continue to be created, proving that in the world of RDR2 there’s always something new to be discovered—especially when it's as well-constructed, deep, and mysterious as the webs that conceal it.
