Cloud Imperium Games has showcased Squadron 42, the single-player spin-off of Star Citizen, once again with a new cinematic trailer, the opening of its Steam wishlist and full cast confirmation. The game still does not have an exact release date, but it is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2027.

Led by Chris Roberts, creator of the Wing Commander series, Squadron 42 has been in development for 12 years and serves as a spiritual successor to the franchise. The campaign combines space combat, first-person action and a character-driven narrative with full performance capture.

The cast includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn and Henry Cavill. Ian Duncan plays the male playable character, while Alix Wilton Regan provides the voice and performance for the female playable character. According to Cloud Imperium Games, the performances were incorporated directly into the gameplay rather than appearing only in cinematic scenes.

The trailer also showcases various campaign activities, including first-person sections, platforming, puzzle-solving, ship customization, off-duty activities, a systems-infiltration minigame and narrative choices. The goal is to combine these elements with the progression of a character-driven story.

In August, Cloud Imperium Games delayed Squadron 42, which had previously been planned for late 2026. Chris Roberts said he did not want to release the game near GTA 6, whose November launch could draw the attention of the press and content creators.

The announcement came after a Star Citizen livestream marred by technical problems and criticism from early-access players. Star Citizen surpassed US$ 1 billion in funding in May and has raised another US$ 50 million since then, while still lacking a defined release window.
