Mixtape was named Game of the Year at the 2026 Australian Game Developer Awards (AGDAs). Developed by Melbourne-based studio Beethoven & Dinosaur, the adventure game combines music and minigames in an experience centered on coming of age. The game also won awards for Excellence in Visual Art and Excellence in Sound Design.

Director Johnny Galvatron credited the team for the recognition. “Mixtape was the result of an incredibly talented team,” he said. According to Galvatron, the original idea was to create a game inspired by the band Devo, but the project ultimately evolved into a work that reached a wide audience. The director also said he was proud of Mixtape and the team behind its development.

The AGDAs jury described the game as a triumph of interactive storytelling. The panel praised its combination of a distinctive visual identity and memorable music, calling it one of the most unforgettable experiences of recent years. The soundtrack features songs by Devo, The Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair and Iggy Pop, among other artists.

Mixtape was not the only production honored at the ceremony. Rhythm game Bits & Bops, from Tempo Lab Games, received awards for Excellence in Gameplay and Excellence in Accessibility. Puzzle platformer Schrodinger’s Cat Burglar, from Abandoned Sheep, won Excellence in Narrative. The Studio of the Year award went to Canberra-based Uppercut Games.

Held in various formats since 2002, the AGDAs are presented by the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association. The awards are now part of Melbourne International Games Week, which culminates this weekend with PAX Aus 2026.
