Epic Games has announced an overhaul of Easy Anti-Cheat to allow Fortnite to run on Linux systems. The new version, called EAC Linux v2, does not yet have a release date, and Steam Deck will initially be left out.

According to Epic, Easy Anti-Cheat has supported native Linux game clients since 2014. In 2021, the tool also began allowing Windows versions of games to run on Linux through Wine and Proton. That support must be enabled individually for each game, however, and many developers chose not to adopt it because the Linux implementation did not provide the same level of protection available on Windows.

EAC Linux v2 aims to bring that protection closer to the Windows version by using security features already available in Linux. These include a signed kernel, signed kernel modules and secure boot with attestation. Epic also cited measured boot, kernel lockdown, IOMMU support and its own eBPF-based logic to preserve system integrity and detect cheats.

The solution will not use a kernel module equivalent to the driver employed on Windows. Epic explains that the required security features are not available in every Linux distribution and may require configuration changes.

Initial testing will take place in Fortnite. EAC Linux v2 could later be made available for other multiplayer games. Developers already using Easy Anti-Cheat will also be able to continue using the older implementation, which is considered more compatible.

Steam Deck does not meet the requirements needed for the new anti-cheat solution. Epic says it is in talks with Valve and hopes to support the handheld in the future, but has not announced when that might happen. The company also presented a preliminary, limited version of the Epic Games Store for Linux, which is already running on the platform.
