Greg Zeschuk, one of BioWare’s founders, lamented the studio’s closure and said he believed EA’s acquisition by a consortium with Saudi involvement was the final blow for the company. In an interview with 80 Level, he said he was fishing when the news broke. When he returned from the river, he found messages from people offering their sympathy.Zeschuk said the news was painful, but the loss extends beyond the studio. He said the closure is especially sad for Edmonton, BioWare’s hometown. The company had shown that something special could be created in a place not known for making games of that kind.Founded in 1995 by Zeschuk, Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip, BioWare continued for many years after Zeschuk and Muzyka left in 2012. Zeschuk does not attribute the changes at the studio to his retirement or Muzyka’s. He said the transformation happened gradually as some people left the team and others joined. Yip had left the company in 1998.Zeschuk grew more concerned about BioWare’s future when he learned that EA’s take-private acquisition had been completed. In his view, the unusual, complex games the studio made take a long time to develop. He contrasted that process with the annual release cycle for sports games, which he considers a more favorable business model in some respects.Zeschuk and Muzyka left BioWare the year Mass Effect 3 was released. Since 2017, Zeschuk has worked at the Blind Enthusiasm brewery. Muzyka has not yet given an interview about the closure.Reporting from Eurogamer.
