Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition arrived on Switch 2 last month following a delay for performance improvements. Now, a technical analysis by Digital Foundry suggests the additional development time brought considerable benefits to the final release.

According to the analysis, the port broadly delivers the visuals of the PS4 edition, but with better frame rates, a higher average resolution and much faster loading times. The handheld experience was also deemed satisfactory, although the game falls short of the graphical features available on other current-generation consoles.

The Switch 2 version does not offer a choice of graphics modes. Its visual settings are fixed from the outset, with no option to prioritize image quality or performance.

When connected to a TV, Elden Ring uses a dynamic resolution ranging from 720p to 1080p. In handheld mode, it ranges from 432p to 864p. The game is capped at 40 frames per second, but the analysis found that it cannot sustain that target for extended periods.

During most gameplay, performance generally remains between 30 and 35 fps in docked mode, with similar results in handheld play. Loading times are one of the port's biggest highlights, significantly outperforming the previous-generation consoles included in the comparison.

“It’s a successful port that may not offer the cutting-edge visual experience seen on other current-generation hardware, but broadly delivers the PS4 feature set with better frame rates, higher average resolutions and much faster loading times.”
