Helen Chiang is stepping down as Xbox’s chief operating officer after just three months in the role. She had worked at Microsoft for 21 years and took on a position that had not previously existed within the brand’s leadership structure.

The change was announced internally by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in a memo dated October 23. Sharma did not provide a reason for Chiang’s departure. According to the executive, Chiang’s immediate responsibilities will be divided among other Xbox leaders for the time being. The company plans to share more details about the division’s leadership once its plans are finalized.

The chief operating officer role was created as part of the restructuring led by Sharma. In the original announcement, the CEO said the position would oversee the financial performance of content, hardware, platform and services. It was therefore a role spanning multiple parts of the Xbox business, which Chiang held for only a short time.

In response to questions about Chiang’s departure, Microsoft said it does not discuss individual personnel matters, thanked Chiang for her years of work and wished her success. The company provided no further explanation for the decision.

With Chiang’s departure, Xbox will distribute the role’s responsibilities among members of its leadership team while it decides who will oversee the division. Sharma did not say when that decision would be announced.
