Sony Music Entertainment will invest approximately US$ 180 million to become a major shareholder in Japan’s GungHo Online Entertainment. The deal paves the way for the companies to explore projects including mobile and console games based on Sony Music intellectual properties.

The key detail for those following the games market is straightforward: the PlayStation division is not involved in the deal. The initiative comes from Sony Music, which oversees music-related operations and has Aniplex as a subsidiary.

GungHo is best known for Puzzle & Dragons and has previously worked on releases tied to the PlayStation ecosystem. The company published Let It Die on PS4 and Let It Die: Inferno on PS5. In North America, it also published Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter.

The partnership could expand Sony Music’s presence in gaming by bringing intellectual properties under its control to new projects. The announcement, however, does not specify which franchises could be used, nor does it reveal any titles, development studios or specific platforms beyond the planned mobile and console games.

Sony’s corporate structure allows different divisions within the group to pursue their own initiatives in the sector. Aniplex, for example, also supports games on Nintendo Switch, despite being a Sony Music subsidiary with no direct connection to PlayStation operations.

The deal is still subject to regulatory approval. Sony Music Entertainment and GungHo Online Entertainment expect to complete the transaction by 30 de dezembro de 2026.
