Rockstar Games spent months exploring Miami and other parts of Florida to build the world of GTA 6. During their research trips, members of the studio spoke with residents, learned about local stories and even spent time with police officers and gang members.

The information was shared by Aaron Garbut, Rockstar’s head of development, in an interview with Love Magazine. According to him, all of the studio’s games begin with trips like these. The team starts with a small group that identifies interesting locations and stories before bringing in more people to conduct deeper research.

On one expedition, the developers traveled from Miami through nearby cities, drove through the Florida Keys and continued on to Key West. Garbut also documented the experience with a camera and a cellphone. At another point, some Rockstar employees flew at low altitude over mangrove areas in the Everglades and ended the day above a stadium where Beyoncé was performing.

“We went into detail, spent time with residents and heard many stories,” Garbut said. The team set out to understand the region from different perspectives, including the wealth, poverty, excess and violence associated with life in Miami. Rockstar also spent time with people who showed them frightening places and shared unsettling stories to create a varied and believable setting.

That research may appear in elements such as pedestrian dialogue, radio programs and advertisements. Rockstar said it considers this content an essential part of the experience, since players will spend hundreds of hours exploring the game world.

For GTA 6, the studio decided to avoid direct references to viral events from the real world. Because development takes many years, that kind of content can quickly become dated. The game’s satire will instead focus on contemporary culture, conspiracy theories and the strange ways people react to events.
