Persona 4 for PlayStation 2 was my first game in Atlus’ series, and I fell in love with it from my very first playthrough. Its blend of school life, dating sim elements and RPG gameplay wrapped in a crime-thriller story kept me captivated by that universe for more than 200 hours. It also had me eagerly awaiting the next game, which would take far longer than expected to arrive and raise the bar for both the franchise and audience expectations.

That bar became the blueprint. Released in 2023, Persona 3 Reload reinterprets the game that established the series’ formula with graphics, stylized menus and quality-of-life improvements inspired by Persona 5, modernizing it for new audiences. Persona 4 Revival follows a similar template, and the impressions left by the demo available at Brasil Game Show 2026 were of a game leaning heavily on nostalgia from two angles to make its case.

Because the demo focused on the early bosses, it was largely centered on combat. In many ways, Persona 4 Revival takes the mechanics of Persona 3 Reload and repeats them in a new game, with more stylized menus and new character designs. The graphics, in particular, are noticeably better and may represent the visual high point of the franchise so far.

There's nothing wrong with sticking with a winning formula, but there's nothing new about it either. Seeing the same elements in a different game can be appealing right now because it taps into two distinct forms of nostalgia: that of fans of the original Persona 4, who no longer see a cast of big-headed characters but instead people with proportions closer to the series’ stylized portraits, and that of Persona 5 fans revisiting the series through these Remakes. In that sense, Persona 4 Revival’s similarities to Persona 3 Reload are a highlight, not a drawback.

The problem is that the demo seemed to rely too heavily on those two lenses of nostalgia to appeal to people already familiar with the series. There didn't seem to be any major mechanical change that would make it bolder or more innovative. Of course, compared with the original, it will be highly innovative, but the Persona series’ streak so far appears mechanically saturated, especially after another Atlus title, Metaphor: ReFantazio, showed that there are still plenty of ways to innovate while building on the franchise’s established mechanics.

On the other hand, Revival seems like another perfect entry point for newcomers. Persona 4 is an excellent mystery thriller, with twists capable of keeping new audiences glued to the screen for dozens of hours. It's also less melancholy, with more confident and less muddled direction than the story itself.

The criticisms above are aimed primarily at those who've faithfully played the previous releases. For them, the improved graphics, the soundtrack through a headset, the redesigned menus — including an excellent opening screen — and the chance to relive Inaba’s mysteries may already be more than enough.

It would've been preferable to get Persona 6 before another remake. That would've given Revival the opportunity to stand apart, with its own gameplay appeal. However, perhaps that opportunity will come with a possible Remake of Persona 1 and Persona 2, which would require reimagining the games from the ground up with mechanics drawn from the modern branches of the series while abandoning the dated systems of the PlayStation One era.

Persona 4 Revival launches on February 18, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For fans, it will be a great opportunity to revisit one of the most iconic PlayStation 2 RPGs with graphics and mechanics refined for the current generation. For newcomers, it may be the franchise’s best entry point in many years.
