Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will get a physical edition, but anyone who buys the boxed version will still need to download additional game data. Square Enix justified the decision by saying that fitting the entire adventure onto physical media would have required some kind of cut or adjustment to the project.According to Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, each platform has capacity limits for its physical media. He said releasing the final chapter entirely on disc could compromise the quality of the game, something the team did not consider the best option for many fans.The decision is especially significant for players who follow Final Fantasy 7 and also collect physical games. The good news is that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released physically on the three main consoles mentioned. The less encouraging part is that none of these versions will work without an additional online installation.On PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game will come with one disc. On Nintendo Switch 2, the physical edition will use a Game-Key card, a format that had already been sparking debate among players. In every case, the console will need to be connected to the internet to download additional content before playing.Fans pointed to a direct comparison with the two previous chapters. Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were released on two discs and included the full game in that format. Square Enix could, in theory, have repeated that approach with multiple discs inside the box, but chose a different path for Revelation.Hamaguchi also said he understands that the choice may not meet everyone’s expectations. Even so, the director argued that, in a market moving toward a discless future, there is value in offering a physical edition.The debate comes at a sensitive moment for collectors. Physical media has returned to the center of the conversation since Sony announced plans to stop manufacturing new PlayStation games on disc starting in 2028. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is planned for Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
