Mobile games are no longer a simple thing like a snake ripoff or Happy Farm, or anything else that “gamers” joked about when they talked about “mobile gamers”. Nowadays, we even have e-sports championships played exclusively on cell phones, like Free Fire or PUBG, and there are several devices that are capable of running games as complex as PC games.
However, the vast majority of these games require a constant internet connection, something that, around here, can be quite expensive if you want to play while moving (“mobile”, you know?) and are not connected to a Wi-Fi network. Operators offer internet packages with data limits, and the connection is not always good enough to stay online all the time.

The fact is, you need to find good offline games when you're on the subway or on a flight, or if you simply don't want to max out your package's data limit. Fortunately, there are plenty of great offline games whether you're playing on iOS or Android.
This is a list of offline games that may not be free! So we've rounded up some of the best, from quick arcade-style games to console-quality ones. Let's get to them and, if you have any questions or suggestions, just leave a comment.
Balatro
Balatro is an indie game which combines perfectly two genres, roguelike and card, and offers a unique experience in the process. It's inspired by poker, but essentially, if you lose, you can try again, drawing new cards to expand your deck and increase your chances of winning next time.
Perhaps the most exciting element is the addition of wild cards. Each time you use them, they will multiply or significantly increase your final score. The game doesn't sound all that exciting writing it down, but trust me when I say it's a lot cooler than it sounds. You can download it from Apple Store and Play Store.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is one of the most successful and cozy games in the indie scene. It takes you to a small town, gives you a small farm, and slowly unfolds into a broad, deep story that is as much about life as it is about bonding with other people.
There are romance candidates, dungeons to explore, farm, harvest, plant and yes, of course, fish. What more could you ask for? This game has many, many hours of gameplay, and you have a lot to do if you want to do well on your farm and not have to go back to your job at Joja's customer service center. Download at the official website for both Android and iOS.
Dead Cells
Dead Cells is one of the best roguelike platformers available on mobile platforms. The Android port is particularly fantastic. You can select 30FPS, 60FPS or unlimited FPS in the game settings, and there’s also an HD graphics option for those with a beefier device.
Although this title requires precision controls, it’s fully playable with the touchscreen as well as a physical joystick. Dead Cells is the “creme de la creme” when we talk about roguelike platformers. If you haven't played it yet, don't miss it because this is a game you can play anywhere. Just look for your version on the official website.
Final Fantasy VI
The sixth game in the Final Fantasy series is often considered one of the best JRPGs ever made. Although Square Enix doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to its mobile releases, thanks to years of many games languishing without updates, the new releases of the six original games are pretty high-quality ports.

While the lack of controller support is a bummer, the touch controls work well, and the turn-based RPG gameplay is as good as you remember. The work on cleaning up the sprites for the graphics looked great in HD. So if you're a fan of the Final Fantasy series, especially if you're a fan of the sixth game, do yourself a favor and grab this remaster today at the official site because it’s a worthwhile adventure.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Konami's classic Metroidvania title, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, was released on mobile to everyone’s surprise in 2020, and is available for $3.49, which is a bargain. If you haven't played SotN yet, it's a beautiful 2D platformer that offers non-linear gameplay, which encourages exploration.
The main campaign should take around eight or nine hours to finish, so it will take more than one session to make your way through Count Dracula's intricate castle. Since you can play offline, you won't need to worry about an internet connection once the game is installed.
GRID Autosport
GRID Autosport is a console-quality racing game which arrived on Android in 2019. The full game can be purchased for $3,99, and there are no ads or in-game purchases, making this a premium release.
If you haven't played this game yet, it mixes many racing styles, from dirt tracks to city streets, and there are countless cars to race. In comparison, most games on Android that are free, have many questionable monetization systems and a requirement for a constant internet connection, buying this game can be an excellent deal.
If you're looking for a premium mobile game that isn't expensive, can be played offline whenever you want and supports controllers, GRID Autosport is the best available at the Play Store.
Limbo
Limbo is a game that started out as an Xbox exclusive, and in the years since, this stylish black and white platformer has made its way to every platform, including mobile, and the Android port is excellent. A boy searches for his missing sister, and only finds some strange characters who either attack him or run away from him.
You can play offline and connect a controller. Although this is a strange horror-themed game, the entire game tells its story through gameplay, without text or spoken story. If you haven't played Limbo yet, or it's been a while since you played it on consoles or PC, this port is very worth it, and you can download it at the official website.
Streets of Rage 4
This one is for all fans of a good street fighting game. Streets of Rage 4 is the successor to the third game in the franchise released in the 1990s, offering one of the best gameplay in a beat 'em up. Since the game arrived on Android, it's been one of the best releases on the platform, thanks to enjoyable gameplay, not to mention a soundtrack, controller support, and optional DLC that adds a new survival mode, which makes the game endless.

You can pick up Streets of Rage 4 and the optional DLC, which adds two new characters and a survival mode. If you want to get the full game and its DLC on mobile, it’s cheaper than its versions on any other platforms. You can go to official website to choose which platform to play on.
Sonic Dream Team
There's nothing like enjoying the speed and fast pace of an excellent Sonic game, and Sonic Dream Team is one of the best mobile games featuring the beloved character. Exclusive to Apple Arcade, Sonic Dream Team takes the “blue blur” and his group of friends into the twisted dream world of Doctor Eggman, as you try to stop his latest plans of domination.
With non-stop fast-paced action, Sonic Dream Team delivers the same 3D gameplay you know and love, with new mechanics and controls designed with mobile in mind. It's visually stunning too, with bright colors and large character models keeping you distracted – but not too distracted, as you have a villain to beat.
Dragon Quest
You can play a huge number of Dragon Quest games on your phone, and as one of the most revered JRPG series in history, it's an excellent way to experience this piece of gaming history.
Of course, the original Dragon Quest is very old and has outdated visuals, but if you want to experience this RPG classic, this is one of the cheapest ways (if you don't count emulators, right?). It's worth the money, especially considering the hundreds of hours of gameplay it offers.
