Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is a survival horror action game developed and published by Capcom. It first launched for the Nintendo GameCube in January 2005, with the original release directed by Shinji Mikami. The game follows Leon S. Kennedy, the rookie police officer from Resident Evil 2, now working as a United States government agent. Six years after the destruction of Raccoon City, Leon is sent to a rural region of Spain to rescue Ashley Graham, the kidnapped daughter of the U.S. president. Leon’s investigation begins in an isolated village whose hostile inhabitants are controlled by Las Plagas, a parasitic organism excavated and exploited by the Los Illuminados cult. The cult is led by Osmund Saddler, who intends to infect Ashley and use her return to America as part of his plan for political control. Leon is aided at different points by Ingrid Hunnigan, his radio contact; Luis Serra, a former researcher connected to Las Plagas; and Ada Wong, a recurring figure whose goals are tied to obtaining a parasite sample. The original game changed Resident Evil’s presentation by placing its over-the-shoulder camera behind Leon while he aims. Its control scheme allows players to stop and aim firearms at specific body parts, making headshots, leg shots, and disarming enemies important tactical options. The game also introduced the laser sight used by several weapons, context-sensitive action prompts, a merchant who sells and upgrades equipment, and the attaché case inventory system, in which weapons, ammunition, healing items, and treasures occupy physical grid space. Resident Evil 4’s enemies are commonly called Ganados, Spanish for cattle, rather than traditional zombies. They can use weapons, throw projectiles, coordinate attacks, and sometimes transform after sustaining damage. Major threats include the chainsaw-wielding Dr. Salvador, village chief Bitores Méndez, Ramon Salazar, Verdugo, Jack Krauser, and Saddler. The campaign moves through the village, Salazar’s castle, and an island facility operated by Los Illuminados. Capcom later released versions for PlayStation 2, Windows, Wii, mobile devices, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and other platforms. The PlayStation 2 version added the Separate Ways scenario, which presents parts of the story from Ada Wong’s perspective. Resident Evil 4 was widely influential on third-person action games because of its camera, aiming, pacing, and encounter design. A remake, also titled Resident Evil 4, was released in March 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. It reimagines the 2005 game with updated visuals, revised characterizations, expanded areas, and modernized mechanics while retaining Leon’s mission to rescue Ashley from Los Illuminados.
