Final Fantasy VII released in 1997 for Sony's PlayStation console. It was developed by Square, with Yoshinori Kitase directing production. The game became the series' first mainline three-dimensional installment widely. Its setting combines industrial technology, ecological conflict, and corporate power. The dominant corporation Shinra extracts mako from the planet Gaia. Mako powers cities, weapons, transportation, and Shinra's enormous infrastructure network. Cloud Strife begins as a mercenary claiming SOLDIER experience himself. He accepts a bombing mission from Avalanche, an anti-Shinra group. Barret Wallace leads Avalanche and opposes Shinra's planetary exploitation directly. The opening reactor operation establishes Cloud's combat role from inception. Cloud later meets Aerith Gainsborough, a flower seller in Midgar. Tifa Lockhart, his childhood acquaintance, works at Seventh Heaven bar. Midgar's sectors are governed by Shinra's authoritarian corporate regime directly. Shinra's president falls victim to Sephiroth's return inside Midgar's headquarters. Sephiroth is a former SOLDIER hero presumed dead years earlier. His pursuit drives the party beyond Midgar and across Gaia. The story reveals that Sephiroth seeks the Black Materia himself. That artifact can summon Meteor, a catastrophic planetary spell directly. Sephiroth plans to exploit the resulting planetary wound for power. The party searches for him through towns, ruins, and continents. Their journey includes Kalm, Junon, Costa del Sol, and Nibelheim. Nibelheim contains crucial evidence about Cloud's forgotten past and identity. The game deliberately questions Cloud's memories and personal identity repeatedly. Its narrative connects individual trauma with environmental and political themes. Aerith belongs to the Cetra, an ancient planetary people directly. Her heritage links her to the planet's spiritual consciousness directly. The Weapons awaken when the planet faces existential danger itself. The party eventually enters the Northern Cave to confront Sephiroth. Gameplay uses turn-based Active Time Battle combat and materia customization. Materia grants spells, abilities, summons, and statistical modifications to characters. Characters can combine materia with weapons and armor slots strategically. Limit Breaks provide powerful attacks after characters take damage repeatedly. The playable roster includes Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith initially. Additional characters include Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent Valentine. The Gold Saucer offers minigames including racing and battle arenas. Chocobo breeding can unlock access to secret exploration areas elsewhere. The original release used pre-rendered backgrounds behind polygonal characters throughout. Its soundtrack was composed by Nobuo Uematsu for Square entirely. “One-Winged Angel” became one of the game's signature tracks internationally. Final Fantasy VII popularized role-playing games globally through console storytelling.
