Starfield is a single-player action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It released for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on September 6, 2023, following early access for Premium Edition owners on September 1. Bethesda described it as its first new universe in more than twenty-five years. The story is set in 2330, when humanity has left Earth and formed colonies across the Settled Systems. Players create a character and begin as a miner working for Argos Extractors on Vectera, a moon in the Narion system. The game uses Creation Engine 2, created for Starfield. During the opening expedition, the miner encounters an Artifact and sees a vision after touching it. Barrett, a Constellation explorer, recruits the player to the organization after pirates attack Vectera. Constellation is based at the Lodge in New Atlantis, the capital of the United Colonies. Its members seek additional Artifacts and the answers connected to them. The main quest eventually involves the Starborn, people who have entered the Unity, and a multiverse premise permits New Game Plus playthroughs in which characters can enter another universe. The player may pursue the campaign while freely choosing among faction storylines and side activities. The major joinable factions include the United Colonies Vanguard, Freestar Rangers, Ryujin Industries, and the Crimson Fleet. The Vanguard questline begins with a citizenship application and develops into an investigation of Terrormorph attacks. The Freestar Rangers operate from Akila City on Akila, while Ryujin Industries is headquartered in Neon, a pleasure and corporate city built on the ocean world Volii Alpha. Players travel in customizable ships, conduct ship combat, land on planets and moons, build outposts, and survey worlds. Starfield contains more than 1,000 planets, according to Bethesda, spread across over 100 star systems. Its procedural planetary terrain supports exploration. Bethesda announced Starfield at E3 2018 alongside a teaser confirming its new science-fiction setting. Todd Howard served as game director, and composer Inon Zur wrote the score. The game’s visual design drew on what Bethesda called NASA-punk, combining near-future industrial equipment with spaceflight imagery. Its September 2023 launch made it a prominent Xbox console exclusive, although it was also available on PC and through Xbox Game Pass. In 2024, Bethesda released the Shattered Space expansion, which centers on House Va’ruun and the planet Va’ruun’kai. Starfield also received post-launch updates that added features including ground vehicles, expanded difficulty options, and settings.
