The Elder Scrolls VI

The Elder Scrolls VI is Bethesda Game Studios’ announced sixth mainline Elder Scrolls role-playing game, revealed with a teaser at E3 2018.

The Elder Scrolls VI is an announced role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios, the internal development team behind The Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda first revealed it on June 10, 2018, during its E3 showcase, with a short teaser trailer titled “The Elder Scrolls VI – Official Teaser.” The video showed a sweeping view of a rugged coastal landscape and displayed the game’s title, but did not name a province, present characters, or disclose a story. Consequently, claims that it is definitely set in Hammerfell, High Rock, or any other specific region are not confirmed by Bethesda’s announcement. Bethesda director and executive producer Todd Howard described the project as being in pre-production in 2018, while Bethesda was also making Starfield and The Elder Scrolls Online continued under ZeniMax Online Studios. At E3 2018, Howard said The Elder Scrolls VI would come after Starfield. That sequencing mattered: Starfield was Bethesda Game Studios’ first new universe in twenty-five years and did not release until September 2023. The later release of Starfield therefore did not establish a launch date for The Elder Scrolls VI. In June 2023, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said the game was “five-plus years away,” an estimate rather than a dated release commitment. The game belongs to a franchise whose main numbered entries began with The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1994, followed by Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and the announced sixth installment. Skyrim, the preceding numbered game, originally launched on November 11, 2011, and has received multiple rereleases. Bethesda has not announced a release platform, release window, price, protagonist, playable races, combat system, or map for The Elder Scrolls VI. In 2021, Bethesda shared a brief public update marking Skyrim’s tenth anniversary, but it did not provide a substantial Elder Scrolls VI reveal. In 2022, Howard told Lex Fridman that the game was in pre-production; the studio has not supplied an official plot synopsis to accompany the 2018 teaser. Its confirmed public identity is therefore unusually narrow: an announced Bethesda Game Studios project, a title card and landscape teaser, and a development history explicitly linked by Howard to the completion of Starfield. The teaser is not evidence for fan theories about location, factions, chronology, or a return of named characters. Until Bethesda publishes those details, the responsibly verifiable description remains limited to its announced title, developer, reveal date, and its place after Skyrim in the series’ numbered sequence. Nothing else confirmed.
