Sony has begun rolling out QSSR on the standard PlayStation 5, bringing an adapted version of the PS5 Pro’s image reconstruction technology to Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. Digital Foundry tested both games for around six hours and described the results as “very promising”.The technology is designed to reconstruct lower internal resolutions—used to balance visual quality and performance—at higher resolutions. In testing, QSSR delivered a sharper, more stable image, with clearer details and fewer visual artifacts as vegetation moved. The difference is more pronounced in Marvel's Wolverine. The analysis noted the disappearance of strange reflections on the character Tyger, cleaner hair and the absence of water trails that can appear behind moving elements. Reflection artifacts associated with ray tracing were also reduced. In Ghost of Yotei, the visual improvement is less noticeable, as the game already offered good image quality with FSR 3. QSSR also comes at a processing cost. In Wolverine’s performance mode, it requires an additional 1,5 to 1,8 milliseconds per frame compared with Insomniac’s upscaler when converting 864p to 1440p. If the internal resolution remains unchanged, this could result in a loss of 8 to 10 frames per second. To maintain the 60 fps target, the game lowers its internal resolution when necessary, preserving similar fluidity while delivering a sharper image. The situation changes when targeting 4K: in Fidelity mode, QSSR takes around 4,4 milliseconds to reconstruct each frame, compared with 2 milliseconds for PSSR on the PS5 Pro. For that reason, Richard Leadbetter considers 1440p the most suitable resolution for the technology.Daniel Craig, Sony’s lead graphics engineer, agrees that developers need to adjust the resolution for each graphics mode. According to him, games that already use PSSR could receive QSSR after a few days of adjustments, while updating released titles would be a relatively easy, low-risk process. Digital Foundry cited Alan Wake 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Assassin's Creed Shadows as possible candidates, but also pointed to a significant difference between QSSR and the PS5 Pro’s PSSR.
