Hidetaka Miyazaki, president of FromSoftware and director of several games in the Souls series, has indicated that the studio intends to return to developing single-player experiences after The Duskbloods. He made the comment while discussing the coincidence that Elden Ring: Nightreign and the Switch 2 exclusive are both multiplayer games.

According to Miyazaki, the two titles were not part of a broader plan to take FromSoftware in that direction. Nightreign was directed by Junya Ishizaki, while The Duskbloods grew out of ideas that were better suited to a competitive multiplayer experience.

“The more time you spend working on something multiplayer, the more it makes you want to make something single-player again.”

- Hidetaka Miyazaki

The president emphasized that the studio remains strongly focused on single-player content. Elden Ring, released in 2022, was FromSoftware's last major single-player game, although it also featured co-op and invasions. The structure of Nightreign and The Duskbloods moves away from that model by focusing on more active PvPvE encounters.

For Miyazaki, The Duskbloods provided an outlet for concepts that did not fit the single-player format. Over time, ideas the studio wanted to use in other projects accumulated, and multiplayer offered a context in which they could work.

The Duskbloods is being developed in partnership with Nintendo, which showed enthusiasm for the concept. The collaboration also influenced the tutorials and how the game's systems are introduced to players. Miyazaki acknowledged that FromSoftware has historically tended to throw players straight into the action and expect them to figure out how everything works, while Nintendo helped make that introduction clearer.

The Duskbloods' network test is scheduled to take place in five phases between August 21 and 24. The game does not yet have a release date, but FromSoftware remains committed to releasing it in 2025.
