Google and Unity have announced generative AI-powered game creation platforms. Google Playground is now available for testing in the United States, while Unity Spark will launch later, with no release date announced. The two tools were unveiled together because Google Playground will integrate with Unity Spark when creators want to expand their concepts with more robust mechanics and higher-fidelity 3D assets.Playground is designed as an entry point. Users describe an idea through prompts, with no programming experience required, then create, play and share experiences with others on the platform. Google described the product as a way to lower the technical barriers to game creation.Unity Spark takes an approach closer to traditional development. Text prompts work as shortcuts and assistants within the Unity engine, rather than generating a complete game from a single request. The tool also supports real-time collaboration. In a demonstration, users Mari and Theo developed Space Corridor, a sci-fi shooter. They created the experience quickly, but the presentation also showcased the complexity of the engine’s available tools. During a live demo, Unity Spark used assets from the Unity Asset Store.Unity chief Matt Bromberg said the tool was not designed to complete a game with a single command. Asking AI to recreate an existing game does not make someone Hideo Kojima, he said, just as typing the first paragraph of War and Peace does not make someone a writer like Tolstoy.Asked whether Unity Spark could display an estimate of the carbon footprint associated with prompts, Bromberg said Unity had not yet considered the feature but acknowledged that the issue deserves attention. Google did not say where Playground gets its artwork and other assets.
