Discord will allow messages and discussions from servers listed as discoverable to appear on pages accessible to search engines. The change is intended to make information currently buried in the platform’s conversations easier to find, but it will not apply to all servers.According to Discord, forums and gaming communities once concentrated lengthy discussions, questions and theories on pages open to the internet. Some of those conversations have moved to the platform’s servers, where useful answers can be difficult for outsiders to find. The new feature is intended to make that content searchable on the web.The rollout will be gradual. All discoverable servers will have a web page starting November 16. Messages from channels are expected to appear on those pages by mid-December. Administrators will decide which channels take part, while each member can choose whether their own messages appear. Usernames and avatars will not be displayed alongside them.In Brazil, messages will be hidden by default for each member, who will need to opt in to participate. The same default will apply in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and South Korea because of legal restrictions. Users in the teenage age range will be excluded from the feature and will only be able to enable it once they become adults. In other regions, the option will be enabled by default, with the ability to turn it off.Making these conversations public also raises questions about companies’ use of the texts to develop artificial intelligence. Discord’s current policy does not allow them to train models on users’ messages. The announcement, however, does not clarify what measures will prevent that use once authorized messages are available on the web. With information from Rock Paper Shotgun.
