Capcom has unveiled plans to gradually transform the RE Engine into an “AI-powered generation engine”. The proposal was presented by Satoshi Ishida, a company programmer, during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 technical conference held this week.

The project is called REX, an initiative bringing together six programs focused on integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning into Capcom’s proprietary engine. The RE Engine is used in the publisher’s modern games, including titles such as Resident Evil: Requiem, Pragmata and Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

The company’s description makes clear that the goal is not simply to add a generative tool such as ChatGPT to the development process. Instead, the plan involves creating features that can support different stages of production and improve the performance of the programs used by development teams.

One of the components mentioned is Re:Dox, a data management tool designed to convert different types of information into a common set of rules. This would allow the system to process that data more quickly during development.

Another program is RE:UI, designed to provide AI-assisted optimization for the RE Engine’s development tools. The presentation compared the proposal to DLSS support in programs such as Blender, linking the technology to improvements in how the tools operate rather than to the automatic generation of a complete game.

Capcom has not yet detailed all six programs that make up REX, nor has it said when the features will be integrated into the RE Engine. The plan calls for the engine to undergo a gradual transformation, with artificial intelligence and machine learning integrated into the development workflow.
