*Where Winds Meet* is an open-world action role-playing game developed by Everstone Studio and published by NetEase Games. It draws on wuxia, a genre of Chinese fiction centred on martial artists and their codes of conduct. The game was introduced to international audiences at Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2022. Its setting is tenth-century China during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, an era of competing states that preceded the Song dynasty. Rather than playing a named historical ruler, players take the role of a young swordsman seeking answers about their origins while becoming involved in the conflicts around them.
The world includes Kaifeng, a city of major political importance in the period, and the rural Qinghe region. These places give the game contrasting environments: busy streets and settlements on one hand, and rivers, fields, and wilderness on the other. Exploration is not limited to walking or riding. The protagonist can use wuxia-style movement techniques to cross rooftops and cover ground with extraordinary leaps. The historical backdrop shapes the architecture, clothing, and political atmosphere, while the character’s abilities belong firmly to martial-arts fantasy.
Combat lets players switch among weapon types rather than commit to a single sword throughout the adventure. Swords, spears, fans, and umbrellas are among the available choices, each offering a different approach to range and timing. The game also features named martial techniques, including Tai Chi and Acupuncture Strikes. Players can combine attacks, defensive moves, and special abilities against ordinary opponents and bosses. Those systems make its wuxia influences playable: an umbrella is not merely a costume detail, and a martial technique can change how an encounter unfolds.
*Where Winds Meet* also gives players activities beyond its main story. They can pursue occupations such as medicine, interact with other characters, and explore discoveries scattered across the map. Choices about how to behave matter within that world: the game permits conduct ranging from helping others to acts that attract official attention. Although its central journey can be played alone, it includes cooperative and other online features. This combination of a personal mystery, historically inspired locations, and unusually varied martial-arts equipment distinguishes *Where Winds Meet* from an RPG that uses ancient China only as scenery. Its title’s promise of freedom is reflected less in a single branching decision than in the number of ways a player can travel, fight, and spend time in Kaifeng and Qinghe. The result is a game whose particular identity rests on both its tenth-century setting and its expansive interpretation of what a wuxia hero can do.
