Tekken 7 is the seventh main entry in Bandai Namco's fighting game series, developed by Bandai Namco Studios and first released in Japanese arcades in March 2015. The home versions arrived for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows in June 2017. It runs on Unreal Engine 4, a first for the series, and focuses its central story on the long-running feud within the Mishima family. Its subtitle, Fated Retribution, was used for an updated arcade edition and later appeared in the home release's expanded content. The game marked the conclusion of the Mishima family saga begun in the original Tekken.
The single-player campaign is presented as a report by an unnamed journalist investigating the Mishimas after his wife and child are killed in the conflict. He traces the family history from the events of earlier games while the framing story follows Heihachi Mishima and his son Kazuya. The narrative revisits Heihachi's childhood and his relationship with Kazumi Hachijo, Kazuya's mother. Kazumi reveals a Devil power and asks Heihachi to stop her husband, who has become a threat. Their confrontation ends with Heihachi throwing the young Kazuya from a cliff, an act that shapes their later hatred. Story chapters also cover the King of Iron Fist Tournament, but the conflict increasingly centers on the family rather than a conventional contest for its prize. A journalist's investigation adds context to the recurring fights and explains why the rivalry has endured across generations. In the climax, Heihachi defeats Kazuya and casts him into a volcano, believing that the Devil Gene has made his son irredeemable. Kazuya survives, returns in Devil form, and kills Heihachi after their final battle. The journalist completes his account, closing the saga with Kazuya still alive and the world facing continued danger from him, with no peace yet secured.
Tekken 7's fighting system introduces two named mechanics: Rage Arts and Power Crushes. A Rage Art is a powerful cinematic attack available when a character's health is low; a Power Crush absorbs certain incoming strikes while the fighter continues an attack. The game also adds Rage Drives, character-specific moves that can extend pressure or combos. These systems adapt the series' familiar three-dimensional movement and four-button attacks to dramatic comeback opportunities. Rage is not unique to this installment, but Tekken 7 gives it a larger mechanical and visual role. Matches remain based on spacing, sidestepping, punishment, and learning opponents' move properties, rather than on story choices.
Its launch roster includes returning series fighters such as Jin Kazama, Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams, and King; newcomers include Akuma, a guest character from Capcom's Street Fighter series. Akuma is integrated into the story and appears in a confrontation with Heihachi, giving the crossover a story role. Downloadable content added guest fighters, including Geese Howard from Fatal Fury and Noctis Lucis Caelum from Final Fantasy XV. The edition received stages and characters through season passes. Tekken 7 was successful, passing ten million sales by 2022, according to Bandai Namco, and remained a tournament title in the Tekken World Tour.
