StarCraft is a real-time strategy game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment and released for Microsoft Windows in 1998, with a Macintosh version following the same year. Set in the distant Koprulu Sector, its campaign tells a connected science-fiction war story through three playable factions: the Terrans, exiled humans descended from prisoners sent from Earth; the Zerg, a biological swarm controlled by the Overmind; and the Protoss, an advanced psionic species divided by ancient traditions. The original game begins with Terran colonial unrest on worlds such as Mar Sara, where marshal Jim Raynor becomes involved with rebel leader Arcturus Mengsk and the Sons of Korhal. Mengsk uses Confederate psi emitters to lure the Zerg to enemy planets, a decision that leads to the betrayal of Sarah Kerrigan on Tarsonis. Kerrigan is captured by the Zerg and transformed into the Queen of Blades, one of the series’ central figures.

StarCraft is especially notable for the asymmetry of its three races. Terrans use mobile buildings, Marines, Siege Tanks, and Battlecruisers; Zerg rely on larvae, creep, Hydralisks, Mutalisks, and rapid expansion; Protoss field expensive but powerful units such as Zealots, Dragoons, High Templar, and Carriers. This faction design helped make competitive matches strategically distinct rather than mirror contests. The 1998 expansion Brood War continued the story after the Overmind’s death, introducing the United Earth Directorate, the Protoss dark templar Zeratul, and Kerrigan’s rise as the dominant power in the sector.

The game became a landmark in esports, particularly in South Korea, where televised professional StarCraft: Brood War matches, dedicated teams, and star players such as Lim Yo-hwan, known as SlayerS_`BoxeR`, helped define modern competitive gaming culture. Its multiplayer balance, map control, build orders, and high mechanical demands kept it active for decades. Blizzard later released StarCraft: Remastered in 2017, updating the visuals and audio while preserving the original gameplay mechanics.

StarCraft also influenced PC gaming through Battle.net online play, custom maps, and a campaign editor that encouraged community-made scenarios. Its sequel, StarCraft II, launched in 2010 with Wings of Liberty, but the original StarCraft remains historically important because its precise faction identity, memorable campaign betrayals, and professional Brood War scene made it one of the most studied and enduring strategy games ever released.
