Sonic Origins

Sonic Origins is a 2022 compilation that presents four foundational Sonic the Hedgehog games in updated forms: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sega released it on June 23, 2022, matching the franchise’s thirty-first anniversary. Rather than grouping unrelated spin-offs, the collection follows Sonic’s early Mega Drive, Genesis, and Sega CD career, from his first confrontation with Dr. Robotnik to the escalating battles surrounding the Death Egg and the Master Emerald.

The compilation offers Anniversary Mode, which displays the games in widescreen and removes lives through an unlimited-life system, and Classic Mode, which preserves the original screen format and life-based structure. Anniversary Mode also lets players play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in titles where those characters were not originally available in the same way. Players collect coins by completing stages and special stages, then spend them on retries for difficult bonus challenges or unlock content in the Museum. Time Attack mode and Mission mode add challenges beyond the original campaigns, while animated opening and ending sequences connect the games into a shared historical presentation.

Sonic CD retains its distinctive time-travel design. Sonic can move between the past, present, bad future, and good future by finding signposts and maintaining speed, while the game’s Little Planet setting introduces Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. Sonic 2 includes the first appearance of Super Sonic, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles combines the two originally separate cartridges into the larger adventure that concludes the classic story arc. In that combined game, Knuckles begins as an antagonist manipulated by Robotnik before becoming a playable character with his own routes and abilities.

The Sonic Origins Plus expansion, released in 2023, added Amy Rose as a playable character across the four main games and introduced playable Knuckles in Sonic CD. It also included twelve Game Gear Sonic titles, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Chaos, and Tails Adventure, along with additional Museum material. These additions broadened the compilation beyond its central four-game package, although the Game Gear games remain separate selections rather than integrated campaigns.

Sonic Origins is therefore both an accessible reissue and an archival snapshot of Sonic’s formative period. Its value comes from preserving the exact sequence of major early releases while adding modern presentation, challenge systems, character options, and historical extras. For players revisiting the originals, it documents how Sega’s defining platforming series evolved between 1991 and 1994.
