Sonic Colors is a 2010 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Wii and Nintendo DS. It follows Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails as they investigate Dr. Eggman’s enormous interstellar amusement park, which the villain claims was built to atone for his earlier crimes. In reality, Eggman has captured an alien species called Wisps and is converting their energy into a mind-control weapon intended to enslave the universe. Sonic and Tails discover the scheme while traveling through the park’s themed worlds.
The Wii version is divided into six main areas: Tropical Resort, Sweet Mountain, Starlight Carnival, Planet Wisp, Aquarium Park, and Asteroid Coaster. Each area contains traditional acts, boss encounters, and challenge stages. Sonic’s movement emphasizes fast 2D and 3D platforming, while the level design frequently changes perspective. The game’s central feature is the collection of colored Wisps, which grant temporary abilities. The Cyan Wisp creates a laser that ricochets between surfaces, the Yellow Wisp turns Sonic into a drill, the Pink Wisp produces spikes for climbing walls, and the Blue Wisp transforms him into a block that can destroy objects and activate mechanisms. Other Wisps include Orange Rocket, Purple Frenzy, Green Hover, and Red Burst.
The Nintendo DS edition is a separate game rather than a direct port. It uses two screens and follows a more conventional side-scrolling structure, while retaining the Wisp concept. Its story connects more closely to Sonic Rush, and Blaze the Cat appears as a significant character. The DS release also includes a final confrontation involving the Nega-Wisp Armor.
Sonic Colors was notable for presenting a lighter, more comedic tone than several preceding Sonic games. The dialogue introduced the robotic character Orbot and his companion Cubot, while the Wisps communicated through distinctive vocal sounds rather than ordinary speech. Critical reception generally praised the Wii version’s colorful presentation, music, controls, and level variety, although some reviewers considered its camera and difficulty inconsistent. The game was also important commercially and helped reinforce Wisps as recurring Sonic concepts.
In 2021, Sega released Sonic Colors: Ultimate for modern platforms. It added visual changes, updated controls, new power-up features, and the Rival Rush mode, which lets Sonic race Metal Sonic. However, the launch version drew criticism for technical problems, including crashes, graphical glitches, and audio issues. The original Wii release remains the version most closely associated with the game’s initial design and reception.
