Rayman Legends is a 2013 platform game developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft. It follows 2011's Rayman Origins and uses the UbiArt Framework, whose tools let artists animate hand-drawn characters directly in the game world. The adventure begins after Rayman, Globox, and the Teensies have slept for a century. During that time, nightmares multiply in the Bubble Dreamer's dreams, and the heroes wake to find the Glade of Dreams threatened again. Murfy, a greenbottle fly companion, guides them through painted worlds connected by the Heroes Gallery hub. There, portraits unlock playable characters and reveal each world's route forward.
Players rescue captive Teensies across stages, including Toad Story, Fiesta de los Muertos, 20,000 Lums Under the Sea, Olympus Maximus, and the living-dead themed Land of the Livid Dead. Rayman, Globox, and Barbara, the first playable princess, share the same basic moves: running, jumping, gliding with hair or helmet, punching, wall-running, and ground-pounding. Additional princesses become available after their rescue. Levels hide Lums and Lucky Tickets; tickets can award scratch-card prizes such as creatures for the player's invaded paintings, extra Lums, or new characters. The game's main goal is to release every Teensie imprisoned by the nightmares inside those dreams.
Legends is especially known for its music levels, which synchronize platforming with rearranged recordings. In Castle Rock, players sprint through a medieval concert staged to "Black Betty"; Mariachi Madness uses "Eye of the Tiger"; and Orchestral Chaos accompanies action with "Flight of the Bumblebee." These stages alter the route and timing as the music progresses, rather than simply playing songs in the background. Invaded Paintings are short remixed versions of regular stages designed around speed and difficulty. The game also included daily and weekly online challenges, with leaderboards for players competing for Lums and rankings against recorded challenge conditions worldwide.
Rayman Legends was first announced as a Wii U exclusive, but Ubisoft delayed it and released it on Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, and Windows in August and September 2013, depending on region. The Wii U version lets one player use the GamePad to control Murfy, cutting ropes, moving platforms, and tickling enemies while others handle Rayman or companions. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arrived in February 2014. Ubisoft released Rayman Legends Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch in 2017; it added a handheld touch-control mode for Murfy and revised Kung Foot, the game's local football minigame competition among friends.
