Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Released on October 16, 2025, it launched for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Its setting is Lumiose City, the Kalos metropolis first explored in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Rather than sending players across a regional wilderness, Z-A centers its adventure within that city during an urban redevelopment plan. The premise was introduced in the game's announcement trailer during Pokémon Day on February 27, 2024, when the future design of Lumiose City was presented as a shared human-and-Pokémon space.
The player character arrives in Lumiose and stays at Hotel Z, whose proprietor is AZ, the exceptionally tall former Kalos king known from Pokémon X and Y. The hotel becomes a base for meeting allies and accepting work around the city. Players choose one of Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile as their first partner Pokémon. The game uses real-time movement and commands in battles, instead of relying solely on the traditional turn-based system. Positioning and timing matter because trainers and Pokémon can move while attacks are selected and executed. Wild Pokémon inhabit designated Wild Zones located throughout Lumiose City during redevelopment.
At night, Lumiose City hosts the Z-A Royale, a competition in which trainers battle in specially marked battle zones and seek promotion from Rank Z toward Rank A. Victories and challenge tickets determine a participant's advance. This nighttime structure gives the game's career progression a specific civic setting, contrasting with the gym circuit used by many earlier Pokémon titles. Another central threat is Rogue Mega Evolution: certain Pokémon become dangerously uncontrollable after Mega Evolving. The player confronts these Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon with allies while investigating why the phenomenon is occurring. The plot places these incidents amid Lumiose's transformation and future growth.
Mega Evolution returns as a battle mechanic and supports forms that were not available in the original Kalos pair. Z-A includes new Mega Evolutions for Pokémon such as Dragonite, Victreebel, Malamar, and Hawlucha. The game also lets players explore Lumiose by day for story activities and prepare for the Royale after dark. Its depiction of the city is not a simple remake of Pokémon X and Y: the redevelopment project changes its playable layout and makes construction, plazas, and planned coexistence between people and Pokémon part of the setting. Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes Lumiose City's planned renewal its central adventure.
