Palworld is an open-world survival game developed and published by the Japanese studio Pocketpair. It entered early access on January 19, 2024, launching on PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store, Xbox consoles, and Xbox Game Pass. The game takes place across the Palpagos Islands, a large environment inhabited by creatures called Pals. Although Palworld has a setting and characters, it does not follow a strictly linear story campaign. Instead, players explore, build bases, capture Pals, fight hostile factions, and challenge tower leaders while gradually improving their equipment and collection.
Players catch Pals with Pal Spheres, then assign them to tasks in a base or take them into combat. Different Pals have work suitability traits, including mining, kindling, watering, planting, handiwork, gathering, cooling, and electricity generation. This system allows bases to operate as production centers: Pals can grow crops, manufacture items, transport materials, and generate power. The player must also manage hunger, temperature, injuries, and resource gathering, making survival mechanics central to progression.
Combat combines firearms, melee weapons, defensive equipment, and Pal abilities. A captured Pal can fight directly, provide a special partner skill, or support the player through a passive effect. Pals can also be bred to produce offspring with inherited traits, creating opportunities for specialized teams. Multiplayer supports cooperative play, allowing groups to explore and build together; dedicated servers are available on supported platforms and configurations.
The world includes ruins, dungeons, settlements, resource zones, and five major tower encounters at launch. Tower leaders function as prominent progression battles, while hostile groups such as the Rayne Syndicate, Free Pal Alliance, Brothers of the Eternal Pyre, and PAL Genetic Research Unit occupy different parts of the setting. Palworld also includes human enemies, merchants, raids, and wildlife-like encounters rather than limiting all threats to creatures.
Pocketpair continued expanding the early-access release with substantial updates. The Sakurajima update, released in June 2024, added a new island, additional Pals, a raid boss, a higher level cap, and further building and multiplayer features. The Feybreak update followed in December 2024 with another island, new creatures, resources, enemies, and activities.
Palworld attracted unusually large attention immediately after release, reaching over two million concurrent players on Steam and becoming one of the platform’s most-played games. Its combination of creature collection, base automation, survival crafting, and weapon-based combat distinguishes it from conventional monster-collecting games. In September 2024, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in Japan. Pocketpair stated that it would respond to the claims while continuing development.
