Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It launched for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 24, 2016, after a public beta attracted millions of players. The game combines objective-focused matches with a roster of heroes who possess distinct weapons, abilities, and roles. Players generally select Damage, Tank, or Support heroes, then cooperate to attack or defend objectives on maps inspired by locations including London, Paris, Hanamura, and the Egyptian temple complex of Anubis.

Its setting is a future Earth recovering from the Omnic Crisis, a global conflict involving intelligent robots called omnics. The international task force Overwatch helped end the war and became celebrated for preserving peace, but internal scandals and political opposition eventually forced its dissolution. The original story begins after former members are drawn back toward action by Winston, a genetically engineered gorilla scientist living on the moon’s Horizon Lunar Colony. Other central figures include former Overwatch commander Jack Morrison, now known as Soldier: 76; his rival Gabriel Reyes, transformed into Reaper; and engineer Lena Oxton, the time-jumping hero Tracer.

Although Overwatch does not present a traditional single-player campaign, Blizzard developed its narrative through animated shorts, comics, seasonal events, map details, voice lines, and cinematic trailers. “Recall” follows Winston as he reactivates Overwatch’s old communication network, while “Alive” depicts Widowmaker’s assassination attempt against the omnic monk Tekhartha Mondatta. The animated short “Dragons” explores the relationship between brothers Hanzo and Genji Shimada, and “The Last Bastion” examines the awakening of the wartime robot Bastion.

The game became known for emphasizing team composition and ability coordination rather than weapon accuracy alone. Its colorful art direction, readable silhouettes, and character-specific dialogue helped distinguish it from more realistic military shooters. Overwatch also became a major esport, supporting the Overwatch League, which began in 2018 with city-based teams.

Blizzard released Overwatch 2 in early access on October 4, 2022. The sequel changed the standard format from six players per team to five, removing one Tank slot and revising numerous abilities. It retained the original game’s heroes, maps, and narrative universe while adding new characters such as Sojourn, Kiriko, and Junker Queen. In 2023, Blizzard canceled the planned Hero Mode, the central component of its originally advertised cooperative player-versus-environment experience, and shifted development toward smaller story missions and ongoing multiplayer updates.
