Lost Ark

Lost Ark is a Korean action role-playing game developed by Smilegate RPG and first released in South Korea in 2019. Its western publication arrived through Amazon Games in February 2022, bringing its free-to-play version to North America, Europe, Latin America, and Oceania. The game is set on Arkesia, a world threatened by demonic forces associated with Kazeros, commander of the Legion commanders. Players pursue the seven Lost Arks, relics tied to the world’s protection, while traveling across continents and islands rather than remaining in one questing zone. Its campaign begins with a prologue and sends players through places such as Rethramis. At western launch, Lost Ark offered five base classes: Warrior, Martial Artist, Gunner, Mage, and Assassin. Each base class has advanced classes with individual weapons and skill identities; for example, Berserker uses a greatsword, Bard supports allies with a harp, and Gunslinger switches among three firearms. Combat is built around real-time positioning, chained abilities, cooldowns, stagger checks, and boss telegraphs. The Tripod system lets players alter many skills with selectable effects, while engravings provide another layer of build specialization. A character also chooses one of two class engravings, generally emphasizing a distinct version of that advanced class’s mechanics in active combat. Endgame progression includes Guardian Raids, where a group hunts powerful guardians, and Legion Raids centered on major Legion commanders. The Legion Raid roster includes encounters with Valtan, Vykas, Kakul-Saydon, Brelshaza, Akkan, and Thaemine, released over successive updates. Lost Ark also uses item level requirements to gate much of its vertical progression. Honing consumes materials to improve equipment and raise item level, although the systems and rates have changed with updates. Horizontal activities include collecting Mokoko Seeds, Island Tokens, Giant’s Hearts, Masterpieces, Omnium Stars, and Ignea Tokens. These rewards contribute to roster-wide progress and collectible menus rather than replacing a character’s weapon. The narrative has expanded beyond the original search through updates including the South Vern, Rowen, Elgacia, Voldis, and Kurzan story regions. Elgacia is associated with the winged Lazenith people and the city named Arkesia, while later material brings the conflict with Kazeros closer to the foreground. Arkesia Express events and Powerpasses have helped newer players enter later content, though their availability varies by region and season. The game’s business model sells cosmetic items, convenience services, and currency-related products alongside optional in-game purchases. Because schedules, event rewards, and balance changes differ between Korean and global versions, patch notes remain necessary.
