Hyper Light Drifter is a 2016 action role-playing game created by Heart Machine and led by Alx Preston. It began as a Kickstarter project in 2013, raising more than $600,000 from nearly 25,000 backers, far above its original $27,000 goal. The game launched for Windows and Linux in March 2016, followed by releases on macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version arrived in 2018.
The player controls the Drifter, a silent traveler carrying advanced technology and suffering from a mysterious illness. The game provides no conventional dialogue, and its story is communicated through environmental details, visual symbols, brief animations, and discoveries scattered across the world. The Drifter explores the ruins of a technologically advanced civilization whose remnants include enormous machines, abandoned settlements, and evidence of catastrophic violence. The central journey leads through four major regions before a final confrontation in the north.
Combat is built around rapid movement, close-range attacks, firearms, and a dash that can be chained across short distances. The Drifter’s energy sword is the primary weapon, while guns consume ammunition that must generally be replenished through melee attacks. Players can find gearbits to purchase upgrades, including additional health, sword techniques, and weapon capacity. The world is deliberately difficult to read: maps contain hidden routes, secret rooms, collectible modules, and monoliths that reward careful exploration.
Heart Machine’s visual design combines pixel art with luminous neon colors, geometric architecture, and large-scale landscapes. The soundtrack was composed by Disasterpeace, whose electronic score became one of the game’s most recognized artistic elements. The game also includes a local cooperative mode, in which a second player controls a companion character, although some story and progression elements remain centered on the Drifter.
Hyper Light Drifter draws inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Diablo, and Dreamcast-era visual design, but its structure is less focused on explicit explanation than those influences. Its unnamed protagonist and fragmentary narrative reflect Preston’s personal experience with a congenital heart condition, which also influenced the game’s themes of illness, endurance, and mortality. The game received strong critical praise for its combat, atmosphere, art direction, and sound design. In 2019, Heart Machine announced Solar Ash, a separate game rather than a direct sequel. Hyper Light Drifter remains notable for turning sparse storytelling into an active process of interpretation, asking players to reconstruct its history from ruins, symbols, enemy behavior, and the consequences of a civilization’s attempt to control powerful technology.
