Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games label. It launched on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on February 10, 2023, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions on May 5, 2023, and a Nintendo Switch version on November 14, 2023. Set in the Wizarding World, it places its original protagonist at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the 1800s, long before Harry Potter's attendance. The game was directed by Alan Tew, with its story set in 1890 rather than Harry's own era. The player creates a fifth-year student who arrives unusually late at Hogwarts and can perceive and wield ancient magic. Professor Eleazar Fig becomes an important mentor as the student investigates a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok and a separate alliance between Ranrok and the dark wizard Victor Rookwood. The central conflict involves repositories of ancient magic left by four nineteenth-century Hogwarts Keepers: Percival Rackham, Charles Rookwood, Niamh Fitzgerald, and San Bakar. Their memories explain why they concealed this power from ordinary wizarding society. Through Pensieve trials, the protagonist learns about Isidora Morganach, a former Hogwarts student who tried to remove pain from people using ancient magic. Her fate shapes the choice surrounding the story's final repository. At Hogwarts, students attend classes and explore locations including the Great Hall, library, common rooms, kitchens, and the Room of Requirement. The Scottish Highlands surrounding the castle contain hamlets, bandit camps, Merlin Trials, and magical beasts. The field guide and Revelio spell support discovery of pages and hidden objects. Combat uses spell combinations, Protego, Stupefy, dodging, plants, potions, and the three Unforgivable Curses: Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra. Players can learn these curses through Sebastian Sallow's companion quest line, which concerns his sister Anne and their family's association with dark magic. Other relationship quests feature Natsai Onai, a Gryffindor student, and Poppy Sweeting, a Hufflepuff who opposes poachers. The game lets players choose among Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin, although its main narrative reaches the same broad conclusion. A dedicated PlayStation quest, "Minding Your Own Business," initially remained unavailable on other platforms for one year. Hogwarts Legacy became a major commercial success, selling 12 million copies in its first two weeks, according to Warner Bros. Games. In 2024, a free update added a photo mode and other features to supported versions after its launch for players.
