Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is an enhanced version of Final Fantasy Tactics, the tactical role-playing game first released for PlayStation in Japan in 1997. War of the Lions appeared for PlayStation Portable in 2007. Its setting is Ivalice, a kingdom emerging from the Fifty Years’ War and entering a succession crisis after King Omdoria’s death. The struggle over the throne becomes known as the War of the Lions, a conflict between the factions of Prince Goltanna and Prince Larg.

The story follows Ramza Beoulve, a noble-born soldier whose choices take him beyond the political dispute and into a deeper conflict involving the Church of Glabados and the ancient Lucavi. Much of the narrative is framed through the historical account of Alazlam J. Durai, who studies documents attributed to Olan Durai. This framing connects Ramza’s story to the later “Durai Papers,” records that challenge the official history associated with the Church. The game’s central tension comes from the gap between public accounts of the war and the events Ramza witnesses.

Combat takes place on three-dimensional, grid-based maps. Units move across terrain and act according to their jobs, abilities, equipment, and turn order. The job system lets characters develop along different paths: Ramza can learn skills associated with the Squire, while other available jobs include Knight, Archer, White Mage, Black Mage, and the distinctive Calculator. Characters gain Job Points through actions in battle, unlocking abilities that can be equipped even after changing jobs. This flexibility is central to building a party and adapting it to different encounters.

War of the Lions adds two major playable characters, Balthier from Final Fantasy XII and Luso Clemens from Final Fantasy Tactics A2. It also introduces new story scenes and animated sequences, along with multiplayer battles and cooperative missions on the PSP. Its English localization is notable for its formal, archaic style, a substantial change from the original PlayStation translation. The portable edition’s presentation was also criticized for slowdown during certain spell effects.

The enhanced game later reached iOS and Android devices, extending its availability beyond the PSP. Its combination of political intrigue, contested historical memory, and highly customizable tactical battles distinguishes it from the numbered Final Fantasy games released around it. Rather than telling a journey centered on exploration between battles, it builds its world through factional conflict, character testimony, and the consequences of choosing where one’s loyalties lie.
