Diablo is a dark fantasy action role-playing game developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 1996 worldwide. It was released for Windows on December 31, 1996, and later ported to Macintosh computers by Blizzard Entertainment in 1997. The story begins in Tristram, where the cathedral conceals the prison of Diablo, the Lord of Terror, beneath its ruins. Players choose a warrior, rogue, or sorcerer, then descend sixteen randomly generated dungeon levels beneath the town of Tristram itself. Those levels include the Cathedral, Catacombs, Caves, and Hell, each using distinct enemies and visual themes within the game world. Its central objective is discovering what happened to Prince Albrecht, whose disappearance follows King Leoric's disastrous transformation in Tristram itself. Leoric becomes the Skeleton King after Lazarus, his archbishop, manipulates him and helps Diablo's influence spread through the kingdom of Khanduras. At the cathedral's deepest level, the hero confronts Archbishop Lazarus before reaching Diablo's lair beneath Tristram during the final descent. The original game uses a point-and-click interface, real-time combat, spellcasting, equipment management, and randomly generated dungeon layouts for repeated playthroughs. Multiplayer supports cooperative adventures through Blizzard's Battle.net service, while single-player characters can also progress independently offline on compatible computers locally. Diablo's music, composed by Matt Uelmen, prominently features a recurring guitar motif associated with Tristram's melancholy atmosphere throughout the soundtrack. The game was created by Condor, later renamed Blizzard North, after Blizzard acquired the studio during development of the project. David Brevik served as lead designer, while the game's design drew inspiration from roguelikes, including procedural generation and replayable exploration. By 1997, Diablo had sold over one million copies, establishing it as a major commercial success for computer role-playing games. Blizzard released an expansion Hellfire in 1997 through Sierra On-Line although Blizzard itself did not develop it for Windows systems. Hellfire adds a monk class, new quests, items, monsters, and dungeon content, but it was not distributed through Battle.net multiplayer. Diablo's success directly led to Diablo II, developed by Blizzard North and released for Windows and Macintosh in 2000 worldwide. The first game's Lord of Terror anchors mythology involving Mephisto, Baal, High Heavens, and the Burning Hells in later games. Its influence remains visible in later action RPGs through randomized loot, seasonal replayability, and the familiar dungeon-crawling structure it popularized. More than its gothic setting, Diablo's identity comes from Tristram, the cathedral descent, and the final choice facing the hero.
